How Do You Handle Rebukes?

Throughout my life, there has been one character flaw that I have had that has caused me more trouble then anything else. This trait hinders close relationships, kept me from growing to become more like Christ, and fostered an arrogance that was disgusting. What was this character flaw?

Not being able to receive a rebuke.

People would come to me and offer me words of wisdom, scripture, and edification but my ears were too filled with pride to hear anything that anyone had to say to me. Until one day I read:

Proverbs 15:5 (AMP)

5 A fool despises his father's instruction and correction, but he who regards reproof acquires prudence.

I realized I was a fool for not receive instruction from others. Ouch. Through much repentance, humility before God and those around me, God is helping me to no longer be that way.

How do you handle rebuke? A few ways to know if you are in trouble in this area is how you react when someone tells you you have done something wrong. Some indicators include:

  • Defensiveness - finding a way to prove your right - always.
  • Irritation - getting mad at the person to whom has given you the Word
  • Frustration - getting all huffy and puffy just because your wrong
  • Carelessness - you simply don't care to listen or change
  • Argumentative - this person yells the popular mantra - DONT JUDGE!

How do we know if we are ok in this area? Humility. A person who is humble will at least be open to the fact that they are wrong. They will go to God and His Word, and seek out the answer. If wrong, they will quickly repent.
