Sunday's

I remember coming into contact with a small sub-culture of believers a few years ago that ascribed themselves to a strange set of beliefs. One of those odd beliefs was that of Sabbath Observance; they would not allow themselves to laugh, play, or enjoy the Sunday of each week. This was due to the fact that they wanted the Sabbath to be holy. Although I appreciate their desire to serve God, this obviously is a twisted example of attempting to be obedient to the scriptures that reference a day of rest.

In Isaiah 58:13-14, God inspired the prophet Isaiah to write:

13 "If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,
14 then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob." The mouth of the LORD has spoken." (NIV)

When we understand what God meant when He said, "the LORD's holy day honorable" then I think the rest of the verse makes sense. One of the meanings of Holy in the Bible is separation. One day in seven is to be separated for a Godly purpose. This would mean we focus on His Words , delight in the day (this would include laughter, rest, and enjoyment) , and cultivate your love relationship with the Lord. What could be a tough subject really becomes quite simple when we remember that God first and foremost wants us to walk closely to Him!

How do you make the Lord's day special each week?
