The Priority of Parenting

I am a proud new parent of my eight week old son.  Both my business and ministry are run from my study at home.  I am sure you can already imagine some of the new and exciting challenges that I am enjoying currently!  I began to feel as though my day and NIGHTS were almost a waste because they were filled with diapers and burp clothes.  One morning around 3 or 4 am, I began to feel extremely nonspiritual and that my new adventure of parenting was made up of the mundane! I turned a light on, covered my son's eyes and searched the scriptures to get God's opinion on my current situation.  I stumbled upon Deuteronomy chapter  6.  What I discovered, drastically changed my opinion of what I had just  felt like was mundane moments ago. In Duet. 6 God connects the most important command in all of scripture with the call to be diligent in training our Children!

Deuteronomy 6:4-7 (AMP) 4 Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord [the only Lord]. 5 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your [mind and] heart and with your entire being and with all your might. 6 And these words which I am commanding you this day shall be [first] in your [own] minds and hearts; [then] 7 You shall whet and sharpen them so as to make them penetrate, and teach and impress them diligently upon the [minds and] hearts of your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down and when you rise up.

Couple of Things to Think About:
  • Jesus said that the command to Love the Lord is the greatest in all of scripture
  • The greatest command must be more than something we've memorized, it must be implanted within our hearts and be a part of who we are.
  • When we have received the blessing of a love for God, we are commanded to impart that same blessing onto our children
  • Implanting this Word in our children's hearts consists of three things:
1)  Teaching Diligently - This means we cannot rely upon Christian schools, Sunday school, or sermons to do the job.  They should be in addition to our own teaching
2)  Living Genuinely - While at home, while on our way to somewhere, and as we go to bed we are to be living the Christian example of a true love for God.
3)  Spending Time Generously - While at home, in the car, or in the Bed we should make time to raise our children in the way that they are to go.

Needless to say, I no longer feel like those burp clothes are a waste of time! Through the context of Duet. 6,  I realized that God has placed the priority of parenting HIGH on His list of commands.  May God help parents everywhere to raise their children!

Do you see many Christian parents Teaching Diligently, Living Genuinely, and Spending Time Generously in your life?
